This restored linen postcard captures the George Washington Cemetery in Adelphi, a community in Prince George's County, Maryland, sometime between 1930 and 1945. As a card devoted to monuments and memorials, it offers a quiet, respectful glimpse of a place set aside for remembrance. Adelphi itself sits in the gently rolling country just north of Washington, D.C., a region that grew steadily through the early twentieth century as the capital expanded outward.
Cards like this one date from the golden age of American "linen" postcards, when textured paper stocks and vivid inks gave everyday scenes a warm, painterly glow. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose output survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection.
