About Georgetown, Michigan
Georgetown is a charter township of 54,091 people in Ottawa County, on the south side of the Grand River. Hiram Jenison crossed over from Grandville in 1834 to become its first settler, and his father Lemuel arrived the next year. More families had come by 1837, when E. Gallop opened a hotel, and in 1838 Ketchum & Marshall built a grist mill at the mouth of Buck Creek and two sawmills on Rush Creek.
The Legislature created the township in 1839, but the settlers did not organize that year, so in 1840 lawmakers ruled that it would be attached to Ottawa Township unless they acted. They did. In April 1840, on the first Monday of the month, seven voters gathered for the township's first meeting. They chose Hiram Jenison as supervisor and set aside $100 for contingencies and $50 to support the poor.
- Haire's LandingJohn Haire built a large sawmill on the Grand River at Haire's Landing in 1856. Fire destroyed it in 1864, and when he rebuilt in 1872 the new mill could cut 300,000 feet of lumber a day. It burned again in October 1877, and this time no one rebuilt it.
- Schooners built on the riverFarther down the Grand River, S. L. Lowing ran a sawmill on Section 4, and A. C. Lichfield ran another large mill that cut 100,000 feet a day. A shipyard at Lichfield's mill turned out several large schooners. A steam tramway hauled logs to the mills until it burned in 1861.
- First school in 1846Miss Tilden, a teacher from Grand Rapids, held the township's first school at Haire's Landing in 1846, though another account gives that honor to Miss Evarts in 1845. By 1880 Georgetown had ten school districts with 691 pupils, taught by 3 men and 15 women.
- Grange No. 458Georgetown's farmers organized their Grange on June 4, 1874. It started out with forty-three charter members, and H. C. Lowing served as Master. They built a hall on Section 16, 25 by 60 feet and 18 feet high, for about $900, and the chapter later had 40 members.
