About Georgetown, Ohio
Georgetown is a village of 4,453 people and the county seat of Brown County, about 36 miles southeast of Cincinnati. It was platted in 1819 and named for Georgetown, Kentucky, and a post office under that name has served the village since 1821.
In 1824 Jesse R. Grant built a house facing Water Street, and his son Ulysses grew up in it. Jesse later added a wing on Main Cross Street, which is now Grant Avenue, and in 1837 he served as the village's mayor. Ulysses stayed until 1839, when he left at seventeen for West Point. He went on to command the U.S. armies and became the 18th president, the first Ohio native elected to that office.
- The Land of GrantThree places from Grant's boyhood still stand in Georgetown. They are the family house at 219 East Grant Avenue, the tannery his father owned across the street, and the schoolhouse where he went to grade school, which locals call the Grant Schoolhouse. Visitors can see all three on the Land of Grant tour, and the Grant Boyhood Home joined the National Register in 1976.
- General Thomas Lyon HamerThomas Lyon Hamer, who lived from 1800 to 1846, taught school and practiced law before he served in Congress, and he later fought as a soldier in the Mexican-American War. Grant called him "one of the ablest men Ohio ever produced." An Ohio historical marker at the Grant home honors him, and his headstone stands in the old cemetery beside the Brown County Fairgrounds.
- Home of the county fairBecause Georgetown is the seat of Brown County, the village hosts the Brown County Fair and its parade each year, with the fairgrounds next to the old cemetery.
