About Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania
Gilbertsville is a community of 5,508 people in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, where Routes 73 and 100 cross. The village was first part of McCall's Manor, and it is named for the Gilbert family, so many of whom settled here that their name stuck to the place.
By 1884 a county history called Gilbertsville a large and thriving village of sixty-six dwellings, counting its hotels and stores. Wheelwrights, blacksmiths, plow makers, carpet weavers, tinsmiths and carpenters all worked here, and the village also turned out a great many cigars.
- Named for the GilbertsHans George Gilbert left Hoffenheim, Germany, in 1750 and settled in this part of Pennsylvania. His descendants grew so numerous that the village came to be called Gilbertsville. He and his sons Bernhard and Johan lie in the churchyard of the New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church.
- Horse sales for the farmersIn 1884 the village often held public auctions of horses and other livestock to serve the farm families nearby. Those farms were well tilled and productive, and their German owners took pride in solid houses and roomy barns, most of the barns built of stone or brick.
- Zern's Farmer's MarketZern's Farmer's Market, long counted among Gilbertsville's best-known landmarks, closed its doors in 2018.
