About Glasgow, Kentucky
Glasgow is a city of 15,014 people and the seat of Barren County. It grew up beside a large spring called Big Spring, on the land that lies between the two forks of Beaver Creek, close to the middle of the county. The Kentucky state assembly set up the town in 1799, and that same year it was chosen as the seat of the new county. Its central spot and its spring helped, and so did John Gorin, who gave 50 acres for public buildings.
The name came from Scotland. William Logan was one of two men picked to choose the county seat, and his father came from the Scottish city of Glasgow. A post office opened in 1803, and Glasgow became a city in 1809. Today the town keeps its Scottish roots alive with its annual Scottish Highland Games, the event it is best known for.
- WKU began here in 1875Western Kentucky University got its start in Glasgow in 1875. Ten years later it moved to Bowling Green, which is still home to its main campus. The university came back in 1998, when it opened a regional campus in Glasgow.
- A flag dipped in tarEarly in the Civil War, a local man who favored the Confederacy raised a Palmetto flag. It did not fly for long. A group of Unionists soon seized it, soaked it in tar and burned it.
- The Spotswood houseGeorge Washington gave a home and land in Glasgow to his niece Elizabeth and her husband, Alexander Spotswood, and the house at 309 N Race Street still carries the Spotswood name. During the Civil War era it served the Underground Railroad as a place to hide people escaping slavery.
- Kentucky's first black mayorLuska Twyman became mayor of Glasgow in September 1968 and led the city until December 1985. He was the first black mayor in Kentucky.
- Nettie Depp's high schoolNettie Depp opened the county's first public high school with a full four-year course, housed in what had been Liberty College in Glasgow. She went on to serve as Barren County's school superintendent starting in 1913, and no woman had been elected to public office in the county before her.
