About Glen White, West Virginia

Glen White is a community of 245 people in Raleigh County, West Virginia, a mile southeast of Lester. It grew up as a coal camp in the Winding Gulf Coalfield. The E. E. White Coal Co. received its charter on December 26, 1907, and the company then built the mining camp that became the town.

  • Named for E. E. WhiteThe community takes its name from E. E. White, who owned the local coal mine. His company built the camp after it was chartered in 1907.
  • A rare shaft mineOnly a few mines in the Winding Gulf Coalfield were shaft mines, and Glen White's was one of them. It sat at one end of a lease of nearly 6,000 acres from Beaver Coal Co., while Stotesbury lay at the far end of the same tract.
  • 245 people in 2020The census counted 266 people in Glen White in 2010 and 245 in 2020.
