About Glenrock, Wyoming

Glenrock is a town of 2,420 people in Converse County. It started out as Deer Creek Station, a mail and stage stop on the Oregon Trail, where thousands of emigrants heading west stopped for supplies. In the 1850s the station was a trading post for pioneers and Indians and a relay point for the overland stage, and in 1860 it became a home station for the Pony Express.

Telegraph wires reached the station in 1861, and on October 18, 1861, its operator helped pass along the first message relayed from the West to Cleveland, Ohio. As the telegraph replaced the Pony Express, relations between the Indians and the U.S. government grew worse, and from 1862 to 1866 soldiers held the station as a military outpost. Only a few troops were posted there, and in 1866 Indians burned it down along with its telegraph office. Traffic on the old trails was fading, so no one ever rebuilt it.

  • The Rock in the GlenAmerican fur trappers came upon this landmark in 1812 while opening a trapping route. Their trail later carried emigrants under several names, the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, and an estimated 350,000 travelers passed the rock on their way west.
  • Wyoming's first recorded coalThe first company of Mormons reached Deer Creek on June 10, 1847. Just ten days later, a mine here produced the first coal on record in what became Wyoming.
  • A hotel from the oil boomCentral Wyoming grew faster than ever before during the oil boom of 1916-1917, and Glenrock grew with it. The Hotel Higgins went up during those boom years, and it still stands on the National Register.
  • The 1923 train wreckOn September 27, 1923, floodwater washed out the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad bridge over Cole Creek near Glenrock. A passenger train ran into the gap and fell, and 30 of its 66 passengers died. Wyoming has never had a worse railroad accident.
