About Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Glenwood Springs is a city of 9,963 people and the county seat of Garfield County, where the Roaring Fork River meets the Colorado. Ute bands used the hot springs here for generations, and in 1868 Ouray, chief of the Tabeguache Utes, negotiated a treaty that kept the area's hunting grounds for his people. White settlers squatted on the Ute reservation anyway, so their camp of tents, saloons and brothels was called Defiance. The narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande reached it from the east in 1881.

On February 10, 1883, the new Garfield County came into being, and its first seat was Carbonate, a remote mining town high in the Flat Tops. That year Isaac Cooper platted a legal town named Barlow on the Defiance site, a post office opened there on June 25, 1883, and county voters moved the seat down to the easier-to-reach Barlow. Cooper's wife Sarah, who struggled with frontier life, convinced the founders to rename the place for her hometown of Glenwood, Iowa. The post office became Glenwood Springs on March 28, 1884, and the town was incorporated on September 4, 1885.

  • Electric light in 1897Glenwood Springs was among the earliest places in the country to get electric lights, first strung up in 1897 inside Iron Mountain's Fairy Caves. A dam built afterward on the Grand River in Glenwood Canyon fed the Shoshone Hydroelectric Generating Station, which started making power on May 16, 1909. Congress renamed the Grand as the Colorado River on July 21, 1921.
  • Strawberry Days since 1898The Strawberry Days Festival began in 1898. It is the oldest festival in Colorado, and no civic celebration west of the Mississippi River has been held longer without a break.
  • Doc Holliday's last monthsDoc Holliday, remembered for the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, came to Glenwood Springs and lived out the final months of his life here. He was buried in the town's original Pioneer Cemetery, on the hill above Bennett Avenue, and Kid Curry lies in the same ground.
  • The Ute steam cavesBefore 1800 the Utes held the springs here to be sacred. They used the Yampah vapor caves, three linked rock chambers filled with underground steam, for rest and healing, and the air inside still averages 110 to 112 Β°F.
