About Glidden, Wisconsin
Glidden was first called Chippewa Crossing, and then Juniper. Its first settlers, Charles B. McLean and John Fraser, arrived in 1873. When the Wisconsin Central railway reached the spot in 1877, a station and a schoolhouse went up. By 1891 the Glidden Lumber Company plant was the village's leading industry.
The town was named for Charles R. Glidden, one of the men who founded the Wisconsin Central Railroad. In 1963 a hunter near Glidden took a black bear that measured 10 feet and weighed 665 pounds. The town quickly began calling itself the Black Bear Capital of the World. Even Glidden Public School swapped its Viking mascot for a Black Bear.
