About Gold Hill, Colorado
Gold Hill began when miners found gold here on January 15, 1859. It became the first mining camp in Boulder County. Soon prospectors struck the Horsfal Lode, a great body of rich ore. Miners worked that lode for many years.
The Miners' Hotel at Gold Hill was a 25-room log building put up in 1872. It became famous for its fine food. The writer Eugene Field wrote about its meals. Later owners stripped the outer boards to show the log walls.
- A state record schoolThe Gold Hill School has two rooms. It has taught children every year since 1873. That makes it the longest continuously running public school in Colorado.
