About Golden Beach, Maryland
Golden Beach is a community of 3,651 people in St. Mary's County. It is a housing development with a private beach, and it gets its mail through Mechanicsville. Before the houses went up, a colonial plantation called Orphan's Gift, later known as The Plains, stood on this land.
A Frenchman built the plantation house of brick, which was later covered in stucco. Because of its builder, the gambrel roof had French hips and the rooms opened through French doors. When Colonel Henry Peregrine Jowles died at the house in 1720, his will passed the plantation to his wife, Dryden. Union soldiers stripped out its paneling during the Civil War, and the old house was bulldozed in 1958 as the property was developed.
“to be holden of us and our heirs at our receipt of St. Marries at the two most usual feasts of the year, viz: at the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the feast of St. Michael the Arch Angel by even and equal portions the Rent of two Shilling Sterling in Silver or Gold.”
- The Fishing Place, 1677Part of what is now Golden Beach was The Fishing Place, a 50-acre plantation granted to Thomas Lamar in 1677, when this bank of the Patuxent was counted as Calvert County. A survey of one of his parcels on Trent Creek had been done the year before, in 1676. Lamar went on to own several plantations, but he made The Fishing Place his home and liked it best.
- A major's grave from 1726Major Truman Greenfield took over the Indian Creek with Addition tract after his father, Colonel Thomas Greenfield, died in 1715. When Truman died in 1726, he was buried on a hilltop near Indian Creek, likely within view of his house, under a large stone slab. His family kept the land around the grave until the early nineteenth century. The tomb and two others came to light when the ground was cleared for a modern subdivision.
