About Golden, Michigan

Golden is a township of 1,660 people in Oceana County, with the shore of Lake Michigan as its western edge. It was established in 1864, and lumber shaped its early years. Collinsville formed around a sawmill and kept a post office only from 1872 to 1874, while in 1873 mill owner Charles Mears founded the village that still bears his name.

“By some error the name upon the records appears Golden instead of Golding, and as such it is known to this day.”

  • Mears, founded in 1873Charles Mears, a mill owner, started the community of Mears in 1873, and its post office opened that May. The village sits in the eastern part of the township, and its ZIP code, 49436, now covers most of Golden. The Charles Mears Silver Lake Boardinghouse joined the National Register in 1986.
  • A road to the lighthouseFor years the Petite Pointe Au Sable Lighthouse on the Lake Michigan shore could not be reached by land. In 1902 the first overland route to it was cut from Mears. The Little Sable Point Light Station joined the National Register in 1984.
  • The Silver Lake Sand DunesSilver Lake is a half-circle of water with the sand dunes along one side and Lake Michigan beyond them. The dunes are a state park, with a section set aside for hikers and another where dune buggies climb and drop over the hills, and Silver Lake State Park holds part of the township's shoreline.
