About Goodwin, Arkansas
Goodwin is an unincorporated community of 113 people in St. Francis County, Arkansas. It sits on U.S. Route 70, 5.5 miles east-northeast of Wheatley, and has its own post office with ZIP code 72340. The 2020 census was the first to count Goodwin as a census-designated place.
- The crash of January 14, 1936An American Airlines Douglas airliner with two engines went down in a swamp near Goodwin that January 14, 1936, in the evening, and all seventeen people on board died. Among them was William Reynolds Dyess, who ran the Works Progress Administration for the state of Arkansas.
- A farm colony named DyessDyess had been a champion of a new farm colony in Mississippi County. A month after he died near Goodwin, that colony was named Dyess to honor him. Johnny Cash later grew up in the colony.
