About Gore, Michigan

Gore is a township of 152 people in Huron County, Michigan, along the shore of the county's northern tip. It started out as part of Rubicon Township and became a township of its own in 1862.

Gore is small, so the county's 1922 history treated its pioneer years as part of Rubicon's story. It judged the soil and the advantages of the two townships to be about the same, and it praised Gore's long stretch of shoreline.

“The next township to which we wish to direct attention is that of Gore, so named because it resembles in shape that part of a lady's dress.”
Pioneer History of Huron County, 1922
  • Split from Rubicon in 1862When Gore was organized out of Rubicon in 1862, its first officers were John H. Tucker as supervisor, George Allen as clerk and Robert Hunter as treasurer.
  • Burned over in '81The fire of '81 swept across every part of Gore and brought great hardship to the families who farmed there.
  • Shipped from Port HopeGore's farmers sent all their produce to market through Port Hope. The township's long shoreline gave it excellent access to the water, which the 1922 county history said made Gore an attractive place to settle. The Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse, inside the township, joined the National Register in 1973.
