About Graettinger, Iowa

Graettinger is a city in Palo Alto County near the Des Moines River, with 832 residents counted in the 2020 census. The community developed after a railway crossed the area in the 1880s. It was named for Dr. Alois Graettinger, who provided land to the railway on the condition that the town carry his name.

  • First SchoolhouseResidents built a rough lumber schoolhouse across the river in 1886, though it had no floor and its roof leaked during rain.
  • Labor Day TraditionThe town's annual observance is identified as Iowa's oldest Labor Day celebration and includes a parade, carnival, street dance, variety show, coronation, and raffle.
  • Community School DistrictThe Graettinger and Terril districts merged in 2010 to form the Graettinger-Terril Community School District.
  • City AreaThe Census Bureau reports that Graettinger covers 0.77 square miles, all of it land.
