About Grand Bay, Alabama
Grand Bay is an unincorporated community of 3,460 people in southwest Mobile County. It sits on U.S. Route 90, 3 miles from the Mississippi line and a few miles from the Mississippi Sound. Local accounts name George Cassibry as its first settler. He arrived in 1853 and built his home near where Franklin Creek begins, close to today's corner of Highway 90 and Ramsey Road. During the Civil War, troops under U.S. General Gordon Granger marched into town on their way to besiege Mobile, and in 1870 a post office opened near the middle of the present community.
Real growth came in the early 1900s, when the Grand Bay Land Company sold ten-acre lots to buyers from Chicago and other northern cities. It promised that ten acres of pecan and satsuma trees could support a household in a mild climate, and timber work drew still more people. For a time the town had a weekly newspaper, a telegraph operator, a hotel, a drug store, general stores and a bank. Then hurricanes in 1906 and 1910 and a hard freeze sent many settlers back north, but their pecan orchards still cover much of the land around town.
- Watermelons every Fourth of JulyGrand Bay's watermelon celebration dates to the early years of the 20th century, but it stopped as the area changed during World War II. The Grand Bay Junior Chamber of Commerce brought it back in 1973, and it has been a July 4 tradition ever since. Today Odd Fellows lodge #73 sponsors it at Festival Park, with local melons, music, crafts and fireworks at dusk. Watermelons are still the crop people tie most closely to Grand Bay.
- Alabama's first Japanese settlerKosaku Sawada came to Mobile in 1910 to teach a firm to grow the Satsuma orange seedlings he had sold it, then opened his own nursery in Grand Bay. Later, working from Overlook Hill and Overlook Nursery, he was credited with 27 new camellias. Nobuko, his wife from 1916, brought about 200 rare camellia seeds. Only a handful bloomed, 20 years later; after her death in 1929 he named the flower Mrs. Sawada.
- A weed from the satsuma daysThe satsuma trees shipped from Asia for the land company's orchards came packed in cogon grass. The grass took root, and the invasive plant has since become a serious farm problem across the Southeast. Freezes once wiped out the satsumas themselves, but a hardier variety is grown commercially around Grand Bay today.
- Treasure in the old bankThe El Cazador Museum, which held treasure from the El Cazador, found a temporary home in 1993 inside the building that once housed Grand Bay State Bank.
- A segregated school from 1919The Grand Bay-St. Elmo Community Center, built in 2005 on the east side of town on Highway 90, stands where the Grand Bay Elementary School for Colored opened in 1919 as a racially segregated school. The center runs as a nonprofit and rents its rooms to the public.
