About Grand Detour, Illinois

John Deere came to Grand Detour as a blacksmith and opened a shop. Besides job work, he made shovels and pitchforks. Two years later he formed a partnership with a man named Andrus, and they began making plows. Grand Detour plows soon won fame throughout the West. Deere later moved to Moline, where he continued the business.

French traders named the place Grand De Tour, while the pioneers knew it as the Great Bend. The village lies on a horseshoe bend of the Rock River. The water fronts it on two sides.

  • The founding storyAndrus and House arrived at Grand Detour in 1835 and did their first cooking in the open air. The village was laid out in 1836, when only a few log cabins stood. Settlement grew very rapidly during 1837 and 1838.
