About Grandfalls, Texas
Grandfalls is a Ward County town on the Pecos River, where settlers arrived in the late 1880s, drawn by dependable river water. Named for the river's upper falls, the community developed through farming, irrigation, and nearby oil activity. The 2020 census recorded 340 residents.
- River BeginningsThe area near the falls served as an early travelers' campsite before farming families settled there in the late 1880s.
- First School DistrictEstablished on July 12, 1892, the school district used a building on the Carr farm that also housed a seven-denomination union church.
- Flood and RecoveryAn 1894 flood changed the river channel and destroyed irrigation works, but the Carr and Sweatt families rebuilt the dam and added canals.
- Oil BoomAfter oil was found in nearby Shipley field in 1928, Grandfalls grew to 500 residents by 1929.
- Town IncorporationGrandfalls incorporated in 1940, following decades of settlement, irrigation development, and commercial growth.
