About Great Neck Estates, New York

Great Neck Estates is a village of 2,990 people on Long Island's North Shore, part of the Town of North Hempstead and of Nassau County. It began as a 450-acre development that Harvey Stewart McKnight laid out on land running from Middle Neck Road down to Little Neck Bay, and no larger real estate venture had yet been tried on Long Island. In 1909 McKnight held an open contest for its landscape plan, and a young planner won $1,000 for a design based on the old country estates of England.

McKnight feared that New York City would soon take over Nassau County, so he pressed the residents to form a village of their own and keep the place as he had planned it. They incorporated on April 16, 1911, because residents wanted home rule and services the town could not give them, and only one other village on the Great Neck Peninsula had done so before. By 1922 the village had 150 houses.

  • Gatsby's author on Gateway DriveIn the 1920s F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in a modest house at 6 Gateway Drive, not unlike the home of Nick Carraway in his 1925 novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald is said to have based West Egg, the town where Nick lives beside Gatsby's mansion, on Great Neck.
  • A nuclear freeze in 1982Three people from the Great Neck Peninsula started a petition asking the United States and the Soviet Union to agree to a nuclear freeze. The village trustees approved it in 1982, which made Great Neck Estates the first Long Island village to take that stand, and copies of the petition went to the leaders of both nations.
  • Village Hall in the Atwater houseThe village offices fill the former home of John Jacob Atwater. In 1981 a plaque went up at Village Hall to mark the 70th anniversary of the village's incorporation.
