About Greenview, Illinois
Greenview is a village in Menard County, where the 2020 census recorded 745 residents. Menard County pioneer Willian Engle laid out the community in October 1857, and it incorporated in 1869 before reorganizing under Illinois municipal law in 1877. Its name honors William G. Greene of Tallula Precinct, who encouraged the railroad to pass through the town.
- First Village HomesRobert McReynolds built Greenview's first dwelling soon after the village was laid out, followed shortly by a house built by James Stone.
- Original Town SiteGreenview was laid out on Charles Montgomery's former land in section 23 of township 19 north, range 6 west.
- Route 29 ConnectionsIllinois Route 29 leads nine miles north to Mason City, nine miles south to Athens, and 23 miles south to Springfield.
- Grove CreekGrove Creek crosses eastern Greenview and flows north toward Salt Creek and the Sangamon River within the Illinois River watershed.
- Village AreaThe U.S. Census Bureau reports that Greenview covers 0.86 square miles, all of it land.
