About Greenville, Mississippi

Greenville is a city of 29,670 people and the county seat of Washington County, on Lake Ferguson, an oxbow lake that was once a channel of the Mississippi River. The county's earlier seats, New Mexico and Princeton, sat on the river and were washed away, so a new seat was chosen in 1844. Greenville took that role when it was founded in 1847, and its founders named it for General Nathanael Greene, a friend of George Washington.

During the siege of Vicksburg, Union troops came ashore from a gunboat, and after being fired on they burned every building in town. When the war ended, the former residents rebuilt three miles away, on the highest ground along the river between Vicksburg and Memphis. Most of the new site belonged to Harriet Blanton Theobald, who gave lots for schools, churches and public buildings, and people came to call her the "Mother of Greenville." The streets were laid out by Major Richard O'Hea, the man who had planned Vicksburg's wartime defenses.

  • The railroad arrives in 1878Greenville's first railroad, a narrow gauge line to Stoneville on Deer Creek, was finished in 1878. A year later it ran 30 miles east to the Sunflower River and 30 miles south along Deer Creek, and steamboat lines on the Mississippi added to the trade. Before long the city was shipping huge amounts of cotton and running four cottonseed oil mills, two compresses and several large sawmills.
  • Two businesses born in 1903Two immigrants started businesses here in 1903. Sam Stein, from Russia, opened the store that grew into the Stein Mart department store chain, and Carmel Signa, from Italy, ran a grocery that later became Doe's Eat Place. The restaurant joined the National Register in 2012.
  • The flood of 1927In the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927, a levee broke north of Greenville. Water spread over two million acres of the Delta and stayed for four months. City leaders sent white women and children to Vicksburg and Memphis, but planters who feared losing their workers would not let Black families go.
  • Stranded on the leveeAbout 7,500 African Americans had to live in tents on the levee through the flood, and the men were made to work for no pay. Word of how they were treated spread across the nation, and Herbert Hoover sent investigators. The disaster helped push Black families to move to northern cities.
  • Blues on Nelson StreetIn the 1940s and 1950s, crowds filled the clubs on Nelson Street to hear jazz, big band, jump blues and Delta blues, and record companies came to Greenville looking for new talent. Southern Whispers Restaurant, an early stop on the Chitlin' Circuit, became the second site marked on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
