This restored linen postcard shows the Gulf Motel, a roadside stop in Fallston, Maryland, sitting where U.S. Route 1 met Maryland Route 152 , about four miles south of Bel Air and eighteen miles north of Baltimore. In the era this card depicts, U.S. Route 1 was one of the great north–south arteries of the East Coast, carrying motorists through small communities like Fallston in Harford County long before the interstate highways drew that traffic away.
Cards like this one come from the golden age of American "linen" postcards, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave their colors such a warm, painterly glow. This image was originally issued by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the vivid tones that first invited travelers to pull off the highway and stay a while.
