This vintage photo of the Glenn L. Martin aircraft plant was taken near Baltimore, Maryland, in February 1943. Under rows of factory lights, a worker reaches across the glass dome of a machine gun turret, set up on a tall stand to be tested before it went into the hull of a PBM Mariner flying boat.
About This Historic Photo
Every turret was put together and test-run on a stand like this one before it was installed. The PBM Mariner was a Navy flying boat built to hunt submarines, and later in the war Mariners flew night raids and rescued downed fliers from the sea. Martin built 1,366 of them at its plant in Middle River, northeast of Baltimore.
KNOWOL restored this print from the National Archives' scan of the original U.S. Navy photo (80-G-412756).
