This vintage linen postcard shows the gymnasium at Fort George G. Meade in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a clean and inviting view of one of the post's everyday buildings sometime between 1930 and 1945. Established during World War I, Fort George G. Meade was named for Major General George G. Meade, the Union commander who led U.S. forces at the Battle of Gettysburg.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured paper and bright, saturated color. This image comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose output is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the warmth and clarity of the original.
