This vintage linen postcard captures the Hagerstown Municipal Airport, home to the Fairchild Test Field and Pilot Training School in Hagerstown, Maryland. Hagerstown grew into a center of American aviation thanks to the Fairchild aircraft company, which built planes in the city for decades and made the airfield a busy place for testing and training pilots.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards reached their golden age, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave their bright inks a warm, painterly glow. This edition comes from the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection of Boston, and has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back the scene as it once looked.
