About Hanover, New Mexico
Hanover is a community of 144 people in Grant County, New Mexico, and it takes its name from the Hanover Mines. A German miner was already digging here in 1841, and the railroad reached the town in 1891.
- A German miner in 1841Sofio Henkel, one of Hanover's original settlers, arrived from Hanover, Germany, in 1841 and began mining. He kept at it for two years, but in 1843 Apaches drove him off.
- The railroad in 1891Miners started taking magnetite iron ore out of the hills near Fierro in the 1880s. That work grew once the railroad line was extended to Hanover in 1891.
