About Harbor, Oregon
Harbor is a community of 2,551 people in Curry County, across the Chetco River from Brookings. Its Tolowa name is chit. The area's first post office opened in 1863 under the name Chetco, for the river, and it moved several times before it closed in 1910. By then a second post office, called Harbor, had opened at the mouth of the Chetco in 1894. Its name may have come from the Chetco Harbor Land and Townsite Company.
- Petitions to WashingtonIn 1954 local citizens formed a committee to ask Congress for money to build jetties and dredge the mouth of the Chetco River. About 3,000 residents signed petitions, and two committee members carried them to Washington in early 1956. The following year, 1957, the Corps of Engineers finished building the jetties and dredging the river mouth.
- A rancher's boat basinIn 1958 Archie McVay, a Brookings rancher, paid for a small boat basin with his own money. In 1959 the Port bought land from McVay and expanded the basin onto it.
