About Haugan, Montana

Haugan is a community of 58 people in Mineral County, Montana, on the St. Regis River about 16 miles east of the Idaho line. The Milwaukee Road built the town as a pusher station, where extra engines helped its trains make the climb over the Bitterroot Range of the Rocky Mountains.

The town took its name from H. G. Haugan, land commissioner for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway. Around 1907, while the railroad's tracks were still going in, the U.S. Forest Service started a tree nursery here. The Great Fire of 1910 then burned Haugan along with several of its neighbors, but the town came back, and a post office opened on March 25, 1911.

  • Savenac Nursery, about 1907The Forest Service opened the Savenac Nursery at Haugan around 1907. Under Elers Koch of the Forest Service, it grew into one of the biggest seedling operations in the Department of Agriculture, turning out as many as 12 million young trees in a single year.
  • Two post officesHaugan's first post office ran from March 25, 1911, until it closed on August 31, 1944. Four years later the town got one back, and that second office served from June 16, 1948, to July 22, 1983, giving Haugan mail service for nearly seventy years in all.
  • The Silver Dollars stopHaugan is best known to travelers for its Silver Dollars tourist area at Exit #16 on Interstate 90. Billboards counting down the miles to it line the highway across western Montana and northern Idaho.
