This vintage linen postcard captures the Havre de Grace Race Track in Havre de Grace, Maryland, a sports and recreation landmark of its era. Located in Harford County where the Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay, the track operated for decades in the first half of the twentieth century and drew crowds of horse racing enthusiasts to this corner of Maryland's Upper Bay region.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images are preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. We've carefully restored and color-revived this piece at KNOWOL to bring back its original vibrancy.
