About Haystack, New Mexico
Haystack is a community of 233 people in McKinley County, 7 miles east of Prewitt, beside a mesa called Haystack Mountain. In the middle of the 20th century it was an important place for uranium mining. The uranium was found on land where the Santa Fe Railroad owned the mineral rights, and the Haystack mine was opened on that ground.
- A uranium scout for lifeAbe Pena's Memories of Cibola tells the story of Paddy Martinez. After the uranium turned up on the railroad's land, the Santa Fe Railroad and the Anaconda company hired Martinez as a uranium scout. They agreed to pay him four hundred dollars a month for as long as he lived, which was big money at the time.
- Haystack MountainHaystack Mountain is a mesa in the western part of the community. It stands 800 feet higher than the country around it and reaches an elevation of 7,833 feet.
- Waters bound for the Rio GrandeRain that falls at Haystack drains south into San Mateo Creek, which feeds the Rio San Jose. Both streams are part of the Rio Puerco watershed, and that system carries the water southeast until it reaches the Rio Grande.
