About Healy, Alaska

Healy was established in 1904. It is home to the Usibelli Coal Mine, the only one operating in Alaska. The mine began a successful environmental reclamation program in 1971. Dall sheep now graze where there was once a strip mine.

Healy began as a mining camp about 1905. It took its name from Healy Creek. Because it sat near the Alaska Railroad right-of-way, it became a station and supply point on the line. The Healy Fork post office opened in 1921.
