About Helmetta, New Jersey
Helmetta is a borough of 2,455 people in Middlesex County, with Manalapan Brook, a branch of the Raritan River, flowing through its center. A snuff mill started working here in the 1820s, the town took shape around it, and in the 1880s George Washington Helme bought it. Voters approved a new borough in a referendum on March 10, 1888, and ten days later, on March 20, the New Jersey Legislature carved Helmetta out of East Brunswick.
Helme's mill began turning out snuff in the 1880s. A merger on February 23, 1900, joined it to a larger snuff company, but the deal came apart in 1911. By 1925 the Helmetta mill was the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, and in 1934 it gave work to 400 people. American Maize-Products bought it in 1986, and after Swisher International took over in 1993, production left for Wheeling, West Virginia.
- Named for Etta HelmeThe borough's name honors the mill owner's daughter, Olivia Antoinette Helme, whom the family called Etta. Her name was joined to her father's to make Helmetta.
- A mill village on the registersHelme's snuff mill stood at the center of a classic mill town of the late 1800s, with homes for its workers, smaller work buildings, St. George's Episcopal Church and Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. Helmetta Pond once powered the mill. About 109 buildings first made up the district, which joined the New Jersey Register on February 1, 1980, and the National Register on August 15, 1980.
- From snuff to apartmentsThe mill sat empty beside the old Camden and Amboy Railroad line after its work moved away. Kaplan Companies bought the building in 2012 and turned it into apartments, finishing the job in 2017.
- A mayor from football's first gameJohn Warne Herbert Jr. was a Rutgers student in 1869 when he played against Princeton in the game now counted as the first intercollegiate football game. He went on to practice law, serve as mayor of Helmetta and work with the New Jersey highway commission.
