About Helvetia, West Virginia

Helvetia is a community of 38 people in the mountains of southwestern Randolph County. After the Civil War, Swiss immigrants who spoke German formed a club in Brooklyn called the Grütliverein, or Grütli Society, and its members promised to move to another part of the country together when the time came. One member, a surveyor named Isler, had mapped much of the eastern West Virginia mountains for a firm in Washington, and he told the others how good the land was.

Six men left Brooklyn by train on October 15, 1869, reached Clarksburg and then walked over the mountains to look at a tract that was for sale. The forest was far thicker than they had hoped, but the price was low, and land agents in Clarksburg promised more help if they brought in settlers. The society chose to come. Because the land was cheap, families could buy farms of their own, and a center of 100 acres was divided into lots and offered to skilled tradesmen.

“In 1869, a real estate company of New York induced a number of Swiss immigrants to establish a settlement on a branch of the Buckhannon River. In honor of their native village, the colony was called Helvetia.”
A History of Randolph County, 1916
  • From 32 people to 308Early in 1871 only 32 people lived in Helvetia. That year C.E. Lutz arrived and became the land agent, and he wrote ads in English and German for newspapers around the country. Newcomers came from across the United States, from Canada and straight from Switzerland. Many were farmers and herdsmen, while others worked as stonemasons, carpenters, watchmakers and cheese makers, and some came as doctors, ministers, teachers and musicians. The settlement counted 308 people by 1874.
  • A band and a health societyBy 1875 the Swiss settlers had organized a band and a mutual aid society, the Schweizer-Kranken-Unterstützung-Verein, or Swiss Health Support Association, so neighbors could help one another through sickness.
  • Fasnacht before LentIn the late 1960s Eleanor Mailloux and Delores Baggerly set out to bring visitors to Helvetia by showing off its Swiss roots. They opened the Hütte restaurant, put together a community cookbook called Oppis Guet's vo Helvetia, and started a public Fasnacht. Held the last Saturday before Lent, it blends the Swiss Fasnacht with the customs of Sechseläuten.
  • A Swiss calendar all yearHelvetia keeps its traditions through the seasons. Neighbors gather for a Ramp Supper on the last Saturday in April, mark the Swiss National Holiday on the Saturday nearest August 1, hold a Community Fair on the second full weekend in September and celebrate Saint Nicholas Day on the Saturday closest to December 5.
