About Henderson, Tennessee

Henderson is a city of 6,308 people and the county seat of Chester County, just west of the South Fork Forked Deer River. The town began in the late 1850s on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, and it was platted in 1857 when the tracks were extended to this point. Its first name was Dayton.

The name changed during the Civil War, when the railroad stop became known as Henderson Station. Shortly after the war the town dropped the word Station and became simply Henderson, honoring Colonel James Henderson, who had served in the War of 1812.

  • Barbecue festival since 1978Since 1978 Henderson has hosted the Chester County Barbecue Festival, which celebrates the area's barbecue tradition. Its first pitmaster was Bill Howard of Jacks Creek, known around the county as "The Barbecue King." In 1986 the Smithsonian Folklife Festival chose Howard to represent Afro-American barbecue, and he was invited to Washington, DC, to serve it.
  • New schools in 1921-22A 1923 survey of Tennessee found that Chester County had established public education. With support from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, modern schools for African American children were built in Henderson in 1921-22, and the fund later helped build another at the Gibson community in 1927-28.
  • Seat of Chester CountyAs the county seat, Henderson is home to the Chester County Courthouse, which joined the National Register in 1979. The county newspaper, the Chester County Independent, is published here, and the city is also home to Freed-Hardeman University and Chester County High School.
  • Metal stampings for GrinnellIn 2000 Chester County's largest employer was Grinnell Corporation, which made metal stampings at its factory in Henderson. That one plant employed 315 people, in a county of 15,540.
