About Henning, Illinois
Henning is a Vermilion County village within South Ross Township, with 210 residents recorded by the 2020 census. Its development followed the arrival of the Havana, Rantoul and Eastern Railroad in 1879, and the community incorporated in 1903.
- Railroad BeginningsThe Havana, Rantoul and Eastern Railroad reached the area in 1879 and later became part of the Illinois Central Railroad.
- Ten AcresJohn Putnam purchased 10 acres from the railroad, and a town was later established on the property.
- Station ServicesHenning's train station also served as the local post office and general store.
- Crossing Rail SpursSpurs of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois and Illinois Central railroads crossed in Henning.
- All LandThe 2010 census reported Henning's total area as 1.52 square miles, entirely land.
