About Herminie, Pennsylvania

The town took its name from Herminie Berwind, and locals say it hurr-many. Her husband, Charles Berwind, led the Ocean Coal Company. The Berwind-White Coal Company opened the town's first mine, Ocean No. 1, in 1893. By 1900 it had 271 workers. The mine closed in 1938 because of water trouble.

Herminie came through two major coal strikes. In the Westmoreland County strike of 1910 and 1911, miners were evicted from company houses, and strikebreakers moved in. That strike failed. A second strike in 1922 won recognition of the United Mine Workers union.
