About Herrings, New York

Herrings is a hamlet of 116 people in Jefferson County, set on the north bank of the Black River in the town of Wilna, along its western line. The community takes its name from two brothers who ran a paper mill there, and in the days before cars it was an important stagecoach stop.

Paper shaped the place for generations. Herrings was incorporated as a village in 1921, the same year its mill owners were planning to expand. It kept that status for nearly a century before giving it up in 2017, when it became a hamlet once again.

  • St. Regis takes over in 1912In 1912 the St. Regis Paper Company bought the Herrings mill. Decades later, in September 1974, the company's newsletter, the St. Regis News, ran an old photograph of the crew who built the mill, caught while they took a break from construction.
  • Shipping cases in 1921Early in 1921 St. Regis drew up plans for a second plant in Herrings, one that would turn out fiber shipping cases. The new plant was meant to work hand in hand with the board plant the company already ran in the village.
  • On the Black RiverThe Black River runs past Herrings and marks the line between the towns of Wilna and Champion. State Route 3 carries travelers through the hamlet. Watertown, the county seat, lies 14 miles to the west, and Carthage is 4 miles off to the southeast.
