About Hickory, North Carolina
Hickory is a city of 43,490 people in Catawba County, in western North Carolina. It takes its name from Hickory Tavern, a log inn put up under a hickory tree in the 1790s beside the old road to Salisbury. Henry Link paid $45 for the first town lot in 1858, and trains began running near the tavern a year later.
The settlement was incorporated as Hickory Tavern in 1870. Three years later it dropped the word Tavern, and in 1889 it became the City of Hickory. The town grew fast in the 1880s, and electric lights went up in 1888. In 1891 four Lutheran pastors opened Highland Academy with 12 students, and that school grew into Lenoir-Rhyne University. In 1913 Hickory became the first city in North Carolina to hire a city manager.
- The Miracle of HickoryIn 1944 one of the worst polio outbreaks ever recorded struck the Catawba Valley, and many children spent the summer kept indoors. Local hospitals could not care for so many patients. So the people of Hickory and the March of Dimes built a hospital for the region's children. Less than 54 hours passed between the decision and a working building with equipment, doctors and patients, and more buildings soon followed.
- The Elliott Opera HouseThe Elliott Opera House opened in 1889, decorated in French renaissance style with scenes from mythology. Its main floor held 750 people and its balcony another 350. Touring shows came through, and so did the Hickory Symphony Band and the Hickory Amateurs, who were the first acting company in town. Fire destroyed the building in 1902, and it was never rebuilt. In 1921 a municipal auditorium went up across the street, and the Hickory Community Theatre uses it today.
- Furniture since 1902Wagon making, nearby forests and two crossing railroads helped turn Hickory into a furniture town. The factory now known as Hickory White began in 1902 under the name Hickory Manufacturing Company, and it has never left its original site. During World War II the factory stopped making furniture and built ammunition boxes for the U.S. military.
