About High Bridge, New Jersey

High Bridge is a borough of 3,546 people in Hunterdon County, and the South Branch of the Raritan River runs through it. In the 1740s two Philadelphia men, William Allen and Joseph Turner, harnessed the river's water to run one of the earliest ironworks in the country. Allen also served as mayor of Philadelphia and as a Chief Justice of Pennsylvania.

The town's name came later, from the railroad. In 1859 the Central Railroad of New Jersey started work on a bridge over the river that stood 112 feet high and stretched 1,300 feet long, and the job took five years to finish. The New Jersey Legislature made High Bridge a township on March 29, 1871, from land taken out of Clinton and Lebanon townships. A borough was carved from it on February 19, 1898, and five days later the rest of the township went back to those two neighbors.

  • From ironworks to Taylor-WhartonThe early ironworks grew into Taylor Iron and Steel and later Taylor-Wharton. Union Forge Park, the borough's main park, sits by the river next to the old Taylor Wharton complex. In 2008 the Union Forge Heritage Association won a grant to create the Taylor Steelworkers Historical Greenway, a path that loops around the borough from the Columbia Trail and ties its parks and historic sites together.
  • An iron ore junctionHigh Bridge was once a key junction for the Central Railroad of New Jersey, whose High Bridge Branch ran north toward Wharton and carried iron ore down from northern New Jersey. Today High Bridge station is the last stop at the western end of NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line. The old branch became the Columbia Trail, kept by Hunterdon County Parks and Recreation, which heads northeast from Main Street and Church Street toward Califon through the Ken Lockwood Gorge.
  • A high school until 1973High Bridge once ran its own high school. In October 1972 voters agreed to send its students to North Hunterdon Regional High School instead, and High Bridge High closed in 1973. In 1975 the borough's high schoolers moved again, to Voorhees High School, where they still go today.
