About Highlands, New York
Highlands is a town of 12,939 people on the eastern edge of Orange County, where the Hudson River forms its border with Putnam County. John Moore, who held a patent for this territory, settled here around 1725. The town was split off from Cornwall in 1872, making Highlands one of the county's last new towns.
- Home of West PointThe United States Military Academy at West Point stands along the Hudson River inside Highlands. The hamlet of West Point lies on the river just north of the academy, and Gees Point juts out into the Hudson beside it.
- Two Revolutionary fortsDuring the American Revolution, colonial forces built Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton on this stretch of the Hudson so the enemy could not move freely up the river.
- Cadets' families at O'NeillChildren of military personnel living at the academy go to Department of Defense elementary and middle schools on post. For high school they attend James I. O'Neill High School in the Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery district, under a contract the academy renewed in March 2022.
- Sacred Heart, 1930 to 2011Sacred Heart of Jesus School, run by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York in Highland Falls, taught children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It opened in 1930 and closed in 2011, and the archdiocese pointed its families to St. Gregory Barbarigo School in Garnerville.
