This restored linen postcard captures Hill Top Cabins, a roadside stop with its own diner and service stations along Conowingo Road on Route 1, eight miles north of Bel Air, Maryland. The scene belongs to Darlington, a village in Harford County that sits near the lower Susquehanna River , country that drew travelers and motorists who relied on cabins, gas, and a hot meal as they made their way along U.S. Route 1, one of America's original numbered highways.
Postcards like this one date from the golden age of American "linen" cards, printed roughly between 1930 and 1945 on textured stock that gave their colors a soft, painterly glow. This image comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose output survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the warmth and detail of the original.
