This restored linen postcard pictures the Hillcrest Motor Court in College Park, Maryland, a roadside lodging that welcomed travelers along U.S. Route 1 just five miles north of Washington, D.C. In the era this card was made, Route 1 was one of the great northβsouth arteries of the East Coast, carrying motorists between Maine and Florida , and College Park, home to the University of Maryland, sat squarely on that busy ribbon of asphalt and rolling traffic.
From the 1930s into the 1940s, American travel was captured in vivid "linen" postcards, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave their bright inks a soft glow. Many of the finest were produced by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work survives today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL, bringing back the warmth and clarity of the original.
