Historic Building in Cherokee, Alabama, 1848 Photo
Frances Benjamin Johnston captured this vintage photograph of a historic building in Cherokee, Colbert County, Alabama. Constructed around 1848 by Armstead Barton, this two-story wooden structure features distinct wood sides and a small one-story entrance porch on both the front and northeast side. The building reflects the architectural style of its era, characterized by its columns and porch design.
In 1916, alterations and additions were made to the original structure, which may have influenced its current appearance. This image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, a comprehensive documentation of Southern architecture conducted by the Library of Congress.
This photograph not only showcases an important piece of Alabamas architectural history but also serves as a visual record of the craftsmanship and design elements prevalent in the mid-19th century.
