Historic Church in Kilmarnock, VA - Built 1669
Frances Benjamin Johnston captured this image of a historic church located in Kilmarnock, Lancaster County, Virginia. Built in 1669 by Robert King Carter, this structure is recognized as the only Colonial church in Virginia that retains its original furniture, including a high pulpit, communion table, and intricately carved font. The church features a cruciform design and a vaulted ceiling, elements that showcase the architectural style of the period.
The church is notable not only for its architectural details, such as bulls eye windows, keystones, and distinctive brickwork but also for its significance in local history. The burial site of John Carter, Roberts father, is located by the chancel, adding to the churchs historical importance.
This photograph is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South and was published in Henry Irving Brocks 1930 work, Colonial Churches in Virginia. It serves as a valuable visual record of early American religious architecture.
