This vintage photograph captures a significant historical site in Richmond, Virginia, specifically in Henrico County. The church, constructed in 1741, is among the oldest wooden buildings still standing in Virginia. It has deep historical roots, being founded in 1611, shortly after the settlement of Jamestown. The land was donated by Colonel William Byrd of Westover, and the church is notable for hosting Patrick Henrys famous speech.
The architectural design of the church showcases a trancept added on the north side prior to the American Revolution. Over the years, it has undergone modifications, including the lengthening of the trancept and the addition of a chancel on the south side in the last century. This image forms part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, which aimed to document the architectural heritage of the region.
