This vintage photograph, attributed to Frances Benjamin Johnston, captures a significant structure located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, near Charleston County. The building dates back to around 1843 and is part of a rich historical narrative tied to Major John Boone, who was granted the land in the late 17th century. The property remained within the Boone family until 1817 and was later purchased by the Horlbeck brothers, renowned architect-builders who maintained ownership for generations.
The avenue leading to the structure was planted in 1843, enhancing the architectural significance of the site. This image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, which aimed to document the diverse architectural heritage of the region. It was published in Samuel Gaillard Stoneys Plantations of the Carolina Low Country in 1938, a testament to its enduring historical value.
