This historic photograph, attributed to Frances Benjamin Johnston, captures a significant architectural landmark in Richmond, Virginia. The building depicted is one of the oldest wooden structures still standing in the state, dating back to 1741. It was originally part of Henrico Parish, founded in 1611, shortly after the establishment of Jamestown. This church is famously known as the venue for Patrick Henrys powerful speech, emphasizing its importance in early American history.
The church features clapboard siding and has undergone several modifications, including the addition of a trancept on the north side before the Revolutionary War. This alteration expanded the churchs main body, while a chancel was constructed on the south side in the last century. The image is part of the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South, showcasing the rich architectural heritage of Virginia.
