About Hobbs, New Mexico
Hobbs is a city of 40,508 people in Lea County, less than 4 miles west of the Texas border. James Isaac Hobbs set up a homestead here in 1907 and gave the settlement his name. When the Hobbs post office opened in 1910, he served as its first postmaster, and by 1911 about 25 landowners lived in the small settlement.
Oil changed the isolated place quickly after the Midwest Oil Company found it nearby. A refinery went up, and Hobbs was incorporated as a town in 1929. At the height of the boom more than 12,000 people lived here. The Great Depression then drove oil prices down, and by 1931 only about 3,000 were left. Work in the oilfields picked up a few years later, and by 1940 Hobbs had about 14,000 people.
“Earlier discoveries produced oil, but the giant oilfield revealed by the Midwest State No. 1 well in 1928 outside Hobbs launched New Mexico’s petroleum industry.”
- From airfield to air parkIn 1942, in the middle of World War II, the Army opened Hobbs Army Airfield on land north of town. The city bought the base in 1948 and turned it into the Hobbs Industrial Air Park, where pilots still fly soaring competitions. The Soaring Society of America has its headquarters in Hobbs.
- 17 state basketball titlesHobbs High School basketball has won a record 17 state championships, and the whole town turns out for its games and its rivalries with Carlsbad and Roswell. Coach Ralph Tasker led the Hobbs boys to twelve of those titles.
- Two colleges since 1956The city's first college opened in 1956 as the First Baptist College. It became the College of the Southwest in 1962 and the University of the Southwest in 2008. New Mexico Junior College followed in 1966.
