About the Town of Homer, New York

Homer lay inside the Central New York Military Tract. The cash-poor state paid its Revolutionary War soldiers with land there. State surveyors gave this township the name of the Greek poet Homer. Settlers arrived in 1791, and the town was established in 1794.

In 1940, Homer's village green looked like an old New England common, with its churches and school in a tidy row. Brick buildings from the Civil War era filled the business blocks. Beans canned in Homer were sold across the nation.
