About Honokaa, Hawaii
Honokaa is a community of 2,699 people in Hawaii County, on the north side of the island of Hawaii. Its Hawaiian name comes from the sound of the nearby sea and means rolling bay, as stones roll. It started in the nineteenth century as a stop for stagecoaches, and it grew in a long line along Mamane Street, the old government road leading to Waipio Valley.
Sugar built the town. The Honokaa Sugar Company was incorporated on May 8, 1878, and the home of its manager, William H. Rickard, became the spark for new building around it. For generations the local economy rested on the Hamakua Sugar Company, which made sugar here from 1873 to 1994. When sugar production ended, ranching and newer farm crops took its place, and more residents began working in Hilo.
- A royalist sentenced to hangW. H. Rickard, the Honokaa sugar planter, stood with the Hawaiian Kingdom. After the royalists rose up against the new government in 1895, he was accused of paying for the uprising and sentenced to death by hanging. The sentence was commuted, and he came back to Honokaa. As late as 2012 the town still held him in the highest esteem, in its spoken memory and in old national songs called mele lahui.
- The People's Theatre, 1930The Tanimoto family built the Honokaa People's Theatre on Mamane Street in 1930. The Hamakua Music Festival came to its stage every autumn between 1993 and 2006, and once more in 2009, raising money for music education on the island and bringing in players such as Ray Brown, James Moody and Hubert Laws. In 2009 it also held the world premiere of Honokaʻa Boy, a Japanese film titled after the town, set there and partly shot inside.
- Paniolo pride since 2006Ranching has a long history in Hawaii, and Honokaa began celebrating it with Western Weekend in 2006. The event brought a rodeo, country western bands, children's activities and a block party with paniolo barbecue to town, with help from a County of Hawaii grant.
- Hawaii's fourth governorJohn D. Waiheʻe III, who calls Honokaa home, served as Hawaii's fourth governor since statehood, from December 2, 1986, to December 2, 1994. He was the first Native Hawaiian to serve as governor of any state in the country.
